Robert Adam’s 1774 tome, Works in Architecture, championed the finest expression of the new classical or neoclassical taste, based on recently excavated sites in Pompeii, Italy. George Hepplewhite’s 1788 & Thomas Sheraton’s 1794 design books further advanced this aesthetic movement of furniture delineations toward delicacy and refinement, presenting optimal treatments for furniture and upholstery. "Eighteen-thirty seems to have been the cut-off date," he maintains. "I wanted my furniture to return to the ideals of aesthetic balance and constructive integrity." Indeed, upon entering their impressive Adriance Furnituremakers showroom in South Dartmouth, you are overwhelmed by the grace and elegance of a by-gone kinder, gentler age. However, what grabs your attention is its pristine contemporary presentation. Lines of magnificent hand-crafted furniture -- blanket chest here, pencil post bed there, surrounded by tables and chairs polished to perfection -- reside everywhere. It's the perfect marriage of form and function, and clearly there is much art in Gary Adriance's artisanry. However, as attractive as these pieces are, it is the craftsmanship that commands respect. Only the finest woods -- cherry, mahogany, maple, oak -- are selected, and each piece is hand-planed and rubbed with natural oil, varnish or antique finishes. At the same time he worked on his own, designing and building the furniture he loved. "We started part time in '81," he says. "I did everything myself out of a barn I built behind our 5 N. Pleasant St. (South Dartmouth) home... our living room was the showroom." In 1983, he served notice "six months in advance" to the Fall River firm in order to devote all his time to his fledgling business. Laurie, the "financial wizard of our company," left her job at the New Bedford Institution for Savings in 1986, to make the partnership complete. Over the years, his designs have caught on and the business grown. In 1987, they created a bigger "official showroom" on Elm Street in South Dartmouth; in 1992, the business opened its present Gulf Road combination showroom-workshop. As Gary and Laurie's family grew -- the couple has two daughters, Nicole, 18, and Alyssa, 16 -- so too has the business' staff. From working alone to adding one apprentice in 1985 and another in '87, Gary and Laurie now have six full-time and two part-time craftspeople to help realize Gary's classic designs. With that growth, however, comes a certain amount of frustration for the artisan now trapped inside the businessman. "I'm trying to grow a company," says the man ever concerned with bridging gaps, "so my time now is better spent designing and letting others do the actual hands-on construction." "But," he adds wistfully, "I miss it." It's a bridge Gary Adriance hopes to rebuild one day. Copyright © 1997 The Standard-Times. All rights reserved. It's an interest he's had all his life, even if -- and when -- he wasn't always aware of it on a conscious level. "My love for antiques, wooden furniture, old tools, all probably inculcated from my grandparents. They always had great respect for the classic tradition." He first became aware of this latent interest, however, during one summer vacation from UMass Amherst. He watched his dad build a 1790-era Saltbox house -- from scratch -- and search for an "appropriate style of furniture with which to furnish it." This attention to detail fascinated the young Gary Adriance so much that he resolved to learn as much as he could about the total wood-working experience. He apprenticed during the following summer vacation in Mrs. Andrew King's South Dartmouth wood-working shop. From there it was only a short stretch to copying the colonial furniture patterns he admired, and elaborating, refining and incorporating those with his own designs. "Furniture made in the 1700s and, in some cases even earlier, still exists," he declares. "I asked myself, why have those pieces lasted this long?" Classic hand-sawn dovetail joints strengthen every drawer while time-honored mortise and tenon joints secure each larger piece. Only then, after all the details have been mastered, is the Adriance signature star-wheel carved on. "Each item is signed and dated," says Mr. Adriance with an undeniable hint of pride. Yes, it's been a long, successful road for Gary and Laurie Adriance, but not without potholes. After his UMass graduation, and a brief teaching stint, Gary had spent four years in the late '70s as a real estate broker "to pay the bills." But his heart was then, as always, in the woodworking business. In 1980, he decided to follow his dream, taking a gamble by leaving the relative security of real estate for a minimum-wage position at the Furman wood-working shop in Fall River. His goal was to serve an apprenticeship for four years "in order to learn from the ground up about machinery. Precision. Discipline." Something borrowed, something true Craftsman Gary Adriance draws inspiration from the past to make furniture to last Gary Adriance doesn't think of his exquisite wooden designs as furniture -- he considers them bridges. "Hopefully, it's a connection between the classic American Heritage designs of the past and the heirlooms of tomorrow," he says. "I've borrowed from antiquity, certainly, but it's our own unique signature line." When he says "our," Gary includes his wife, the former Laurie Carreiro. In tandem, the Dartmouth High School grads (he 1968, she 1972) have taken Adriance Furnituremakers from humble beginnings -- they started in a small barn in the back yard of their Padanaram home in 1981 -- to a company that now boasts a nationwide clientele. All based on Gary's desire to create "furniture that will last." "There's so much planned obsolescence with today's disposable products," he explains. "I just wanted to do it right." And to "do it right" meant studying the classic designs -- and durability -- of pre-Civil War, New England Shaker and colonial masterpieces. Shaker-inspired styles predominate, along with exquisite reproductions and originals in the style of Colonial Newport and other periods. The workroom is behind the showroom, where the furniture is displayed in room settings. Custom pieces are a specialty. In 2003 Adriance opened a second showroom in nearby Newport, RI, but the South Dartmouth store is larger. X Adriance Furniture in Dartmouth still hand-crafting with pride By By Eileen Marum Bulletin correspondent May 28, 2010 Adriance Furniture has been creating fine handcrafted furniture for nearly three decades in South Dartmouth. But, one would hardly think so to walk through the woodworking shop and observe the collection, hand tools, and the men wielding them. Except for a few electrical drills and table saws scattered about, it feels as if you might have stepped back into the early 1800's. Piles of lumber, cherry, mahogany, tiger maple, oak, and walnut are neatly stacked on cradles waiting for craftsmen to turn them into designs from the past. "We excel at designing and making collectible, one of a kind pieces," said Gary Adriance, master craftsman and CEO of Adriance Furniture. The showroom is stocked with distinctive furniture crafted with hand planes, chisels, handsaws, mallets, and panel saws, and then, hand rubbed to perfection with five to 10 coats of natural oils, antique finishes or varnish creating a warm amber patina. Walking through the collection, Adriance stops and points with pride to the finer points of craftsmanship incorporated into each piece of his product line. "Our drawers are constructed with authentic hand-cut dovetails, and this centuries old traditional method is very strong, aesthetically pleasing and enhances the overall intrinsic value of our furniture," he said. Although the furniture market business, like all businesses since the recession, has slowed, Adriance believes the economy is turning around. Still, he is looking for investors to promote his company and take it to the next level. "I want to do what I enjoy — remain a craftsman," he said. "I need to find someone skilled in marketing and finance to help grow the business." He expressed the desire to expand the furniture making portion of the business into New Bedford, perhaps in a mill building. "I think I could create 20 new jobs," he said. "I have also been looking to open a small workshop in the National Park to practice my craft and increase visibility." But Adriance also concedes that his particular spot on the furniture market spectrum is unique and possibly limited. "I have a niche at the very high end, which according to a Harvard study, gives me two to five percent of the market share," he said. That market is spread all over — Adriance furniture has been shipped to nearly every state, from the East Coast to the Hawaiian Islands and on three continents. "The items crafted are a connection between classic American Heritage designs of the past and the heirlooms of tomorrow," Adriance said. "I've borrowed from antiquity, certainly, but it's our own unique signature line." "Our craftsmen are determined in their pursuit of excellence...they know the secrets of wood and each artisan shapes the selected woods into Colonial Masterpieces," Adriance said. Adriance concedes that having the lowest price is not a strong position for small business. Larger competitors with deep pockets and the ability to have lower operating costs will outsell any small business trying to compete on price alone. But he believes that avoiding the low price strategy starts with looking at the demand in the market and examining other factors including that the affluent market has fewer competitiors; that buyers want quality and are accustomed to paying more for high-quality furniture; and that the products are exclusive to this business and therefore provide protection from falling prices and miscellaneous competition. Adriance is also banking on the brand name he has developed in the market. "We have a triple 'A' rating for quality service to our customers, as well as a triple 'A' credit rating. Only after all the details have been mastered is the Adriance signature star-wheel carved on, and only then, is each item signed and dated." he said, with an undeniable hint of pride in his voice. X The Apprentices He's not The Donald, but furniture maker says mentoring is a major part of his successful business By Tod Riggio, Associate Editor, Woodshop News The help-wanted advertisement seeks furniture makers, experience preferred, and alludes to an in-shop training program. But when applicants arrive at Adriance Furnituremakers in South Dartmouth, they're presented with a 3-inch-thick binder that contains a hand-shake agreement requiring 10,000 hours of on-the-job training plus 750 hours of academic study. This tends to separate the wheat from the chaff, in the words of shop owner Gary Adriance, who instituted an apprentice program about five years ago. "I like to say it's a good opportunity for people to come in and learn because we build anything from a contemporary piece to some of the more traditional forms," Mr. Adriance said. "You can't avoid learning in our shop. It's actually impossible. Our challenge in the past several years has been finding craftsmen who can stand the learning curve. "We have finally realized that we're going to be like an elite Ivy League school that has high standards to get in and high standards to graduate. Let it be written The training manual includes employee handbook-type information, such as the company's mission statement and policies. The pages are laminated and bound in a three-ring notebook. At least a third of the manual is devoted to construction sequence information for building various pieces. "I'm big on writing things down," Mr. Adriance said. "What isn't written doesn't exist." When Mr. Adriance discovered that Massachusetts did not have any guidelines specifically for a furniture-maker apprentice program, as it does for electricians and other tradesmen, he wrote some. His 10,000-hour/750-hour study program includes a reading list of books and magazine articles, and visits to museum furniture exhibits. "I believe in the academic part of it," Mr. Adriance said. "Having been to college, I know that's part of what we do. I want people who can absorb the academics. That's why we do the museum visits, reading articles and books that define how to use machinery and bench tools. It's similar to what people would learn in a good furniture-making school but with more on-the-job training. "We have seminars on a regular basis, as needed, on cutting dovetails, mortise and tenon joinery, and more esoteric skills like carving, inlay and veneer work, which might require specialized training. There's also constant quality control, usually from the craftsmen themselves. They are motivated to do good work." Most of Mr. Adriance's employees are college graduates. He seeks individuals who want to work in a small company and be part of a team, rather than isolate themselves. Experience is also a prerequisite, but a willingness to learn and a commitment to complete the training program are the most desirable traits. "I look for a few years of work experience," Mr. Adriance said. "That shows demonstrable competency in your trade, but preferably in a cabinet shop. They can come here and learn more advanced skills. And I have an application process where the person grades themselves and answers some essay questions. It separates the wheat from the chaff immediately. We know we'll never be a very large company so I'm going to surround myself with some pretty bright woodworkers who are self-motivated and I'll provide the means and the opportunity for them to make a living. We're already on profit sharing. It's pretty unique." 5-year commitment This doesn't mean that every prospective employee must complete the entire training program. Credit is given for previous experience. "If a person can come in here and build furniture, we would acknowledge that. It's not that we're looking for the rank apprentice. We would prefer they have some experience," said Mr. Adriance. But he's quite adamant about the 10,000-hour requirement, which translates to about five years. "It's what people need to do become proficient at something," said Mr. Adriance, comparing it to the length of study for a doctor or lawyer. "You can train a person to do basic work, but it doesn't mean they're going to be competent in the thoroughness of the whole field. There's no cash incentive for me to do it this way and I might be crazy, but I do like to work with people and see what their potential is." The training is also lengthy because each employee is required to learn diverse hand and machine skills. "The trick in this shop is to get sharpening skills into people as quickly as possible. All of our guys can sharpen, dovetail, do simple carvings, inlay. ... They have to take care of their bench tools and of course they get an education in the machines. They basically build their own pieces and I'm very proud of the fact that they do their own work. That was the hard thing for me -- to get myself off the floor. Some owners couldn't do that. To this day I don't know if it was a smart business decision but I know what quality is and I can always help. That doesn't seem to be necessary anymore. The business is now mature enough that I've transferred the skills to the craftsmen. It's allowed me to open up the galleries." Looking to the past Mr. Adriance started building furniture in 1983 at his backyard shop. His wife, Laurie -- introduced as the artistic, creative, financial wizard -- joined the business in 1987. They moved to their current 5,000-square-foot shop and gallery in 1992 and opened a second gallery in Newport, R.I., in 2002. Mr. Adriance designed and constructed the shop, which features 10 benches and an orderly layout of primarily European-made machinery. It resembles a boatyard loft -- which suits the marina theme of South Dartmouth -- and easily accommodates the current crew. "We're probably at 1/3 capacity," said Mr. Adriance. "I'm under-utilizing this building, something my bank is keenly award of, my CPA and the three consultants I've hired. But I refuse to grow if it means poor work. The businesses I've seen grow, they worry me. The craftsmanship becomes mundane. I don't want to do that. I really want our craftsmanship to be the finest." The goal of Adriance Furnituremakers is to produce heirloom-quality pieces, and Mr. Adriance looks to the past for inspiration. "We are definitely borrowing from the Shaker legacy. Well, Colonial first of all, and Federal, Shaker and nautical," he said. "I look to museum pieces, try to absorb what I can and build either exact replicas, to the best of my abilities, but mostly I'm inspired by those pieces. If I'm going to copy a John Townsend table, I can't call it an Adriance original, but I can say it has my hand on it. But there are a handful of antiques that can't be changed. They are as near perfect as a human being can design. "I have found that if you contemporize a piece, it may almost have more appeal. If we build furniture that's too utterly simple and plain, I don't seem to appreciate it, nor does my customer. It not only has to have some sort of aesthetic design quality but be fairly difficult to craft. So we do try to do work that separates us, as do other good craftsmen." He's currently designing several Federal-style pieces he hopes to build, but the shop is busy with orders for the next few months. After Adriance produces a full-scale drawing, computer software is used to produce a parts list, and usually two craftsmen build the piece. "We tend to do a lot of our work in pairs, and that's a great system to take a lead person with several years experience and team them up with someone who's learning, all under the watchful eye of a quality controller, which at this point is me," said Mr. Adriance. "But you're always trying to eliminate the manager in a good business. The management should come from within, so part of our system is to coach people to become their own managers and their own quality control inspectors." Making the transition Mr. Adriance has all but given up the woodworking duties. He spends his time designing, coaching, controlling quality, marketing and handling other business responsibilities. Running two galleries has put new demands on his time and has required the hiring of gallery representatives. Both galleries are nicely appointed with furniture displays, accented by handcrafted accessories and art. While they display work from other artists, like painters, carvers and glass blowers, only about 2 percent of revenues are from art sales, said Mr. Adriance. Mr. Adriance was scouting for a third gallery location and was thinking about Boston or New York City. "But every time you look at the rent you know you're going to have to triple production. Hence the training program," he said. The shop doesn't keep a lot of inventory, unless you count what goes into the two galleries. Still that's 30 to 50 pieces, and more will have to be made to furnish the third gallery. The goal is to take an order from a showroom piece. "I think that's one of the reasons a business like ours takes 20 years to start, because you're always inventing something new. If I made one object, I would be a manufacturer. There'd be stations. But as artisans, we have to be prepared to move from a table to a sofa, and that is what takes several years of (employee) training. "I don't know what's going to sell next or what to put on display. If we can make a run of something that moves, we will. Anything that helps the profit-sharing craftsman go a little quicker, that's more income in their pocket," said Mr. Adriance. Marketing to a few The Harvard Business School has studied Adriance Furnituremakers and the marketing of handcrafted furniture. The conclusion was that high-end woodworkers sell to about 2 percent of Americans. "I always thought it was maybe 5 percent," said Mr. Adriance. "That 2 percent doesn't even know for sure what they want. "I have a theory that if you sell a premium product, you can get a premium price. But it has to be marketed only to people who have an appreciation for that object. It's amazing to think that 98 percent of the people you meet aren't going to buy your furniture, but Harvard Business School tells us that." Mr. Adriance has found a direct correlation between marketing effort and sales. "If you don't want to grow, stop advertising and talking to people. If you want to grow, do trade shows, advertise, open showrooms and talk to everyone. Sometimes I get tired of it all. At heart I'm really a craftsman. "But the business was a small size -- roughly $100,000 in annual sales -- when I was in my backyard. When we moved here it tripled because we were more accessible. Now that we're in Newport, it seems to be growing about 50 percent this year." The shop's gross annual income this year is projected at about $400,000 which is more than last year. Next year the goal is $500,000. While Mr. Adriance wants to add employees and another gallery, quality work will always be his first priority. Call it cautious growth, if you will. "We don't know what we'll have to do to maintain the quality," Mr. Adriance admitted. "We suspect there'll be divisions of labor -- carvers and so forth -- and that would be OK. And certain batches of work will happen; we already to that to some extent. But I think it's important that the craftsman be happy. Our exquisite Pembroke Tea Table with drawer is inspired by neoclassical designs from Boston and London, circa 1800. The top forms a lovely ellipse with the leaves up.

The bowed birdseye maple drawer front is bordered by black-white lines, fiddleback mahogany, and ebony moulding, accented with a European brass knob. A similar faux-drawer front adorns the opposing end. The rails and aprons are inlaid with a band of tiger maple and black-white lines.

The top features a white-black-white band around the perimeter. The edges of the top and the leaves are "hollowed-carved" to reflect available light.

The tapered legs are inlaid with white-black-satinwood cuffs and maple inlays of crossed vines, berries, leaves and bellflowers on eight faces. Eight black-white bordered oval paterae of curly satinwood are inlaid into the leg pommels. The french-polished varnish creates a resplendent patina.

In Colonial Newport, RI, circa 1765, the preferred Townsend-Goddard desk for writing letters was of the slant front style. Our Newport Slant Front Desk features exposed dovetails at the top, a lockable writing lid, pull out supports, and four drawers.

The Block & Shell carved interior includes seventeen drawers, a shell-carved door fronting three hidden drawers, three lovely scallop-shell carvings, and document pigeonholes surmounted with carved finger drawers, separated by cyma-carved dividers. The juxtaposed convex-concave blocking is brilliant in design.

Traditional marlinespike seamanship is apparent in the hand-tied rope beckets, featuring coachcomb hitching, and double-wall & crown turk's heads. Tapered cleats with carved starwheels secure the beckets to the tumblehome chest-ends above centerline, providing a gimballed counterbalance when hoisting on deck. The wide-board top features an edge inlaid with darts on black on tiger maple, and a surface perimeter band of white-black-white emphasizing the bowed form.

The elegant base, with flared legs and lovely cyma curves, is distinguished from the drawers with a band of white-black-satinwood, and inlaid with a spray of holly bellflowers, leaves, and berries, tied with a bowknot. The back is wide-board pine.

The french-polished, caramel varnish creates a resplendent antique patina.

Our magnificent Federal Desk is inspired by a neoclassical design published in George Hepplewhite's English classic of 1788. It features a gorgeous mahogany Bow & Cove top surmounting five conforming curved drawer fronts of exquisite birdseye maple, black-white string and fiddleback mahogany, bordered with ebony moulding. Lovely dogwood-flower European brass knobs decorate the drawer fronts. The drawers are finely hand-dovetailed in the best English manner. The drawer rails are faced with fiddleback mahogany, with a black-white checkered border on the legs. Arched spandrels, inlaid with ebony and a white border brace the center legs.

The top displays inlays of white string at the perimeter and cross vines with bellflowers at the corners. The top edge is inlaid with darts on black on fiddleback maple.

The double-tapered front legs display a hand-inlaid bowknot and meandering vine over graduated bellflowers, bordered by white string inlays and anchored with satinwood cuffs.

Our exquisite neoclassical Federal Shelf Clock is attributed to a masterwork by John Seymour of Boston, circa 1805.

The reticulated crest raised on an inlaid plinth is surmounted by a hand-cast brass finial. The mitered, kidney-shaped door, with hand-blown glass, is framed by white-black checkered inlay. The Roman dial, gilt scrolls and maker’s name are hand-painted.

Below the door, a cove and astragal waist molding complement the flame mahogany case, bordered with white-black-white inlay and fiddleback mahogany. Flared cyma feet accent the case. The back is quartersawn pine.
